When your child experiences an injury, it’s natural to wonder if a bone might be broken. Understanding fractures can help you feel more confident about identifying the signs and knowing what steps to take.
A fracture is another term for a broken bone. These two words are used interchangeably and refer to any break in the continuity of the bone. Fractures can vary widely, from minor cracks to severe breaks that disrupt the bone’s alignment. No matter the type, each requires careful evaluation and appropriate care to ensure proper healing.
Not every bone injury is a fracture. Sometimes, an impact can cause a bone contusion, which is essentially a deep bruise to the bone. While it can be painful and take time to heal, a contusion does not involve broken bone. However, the distinction isn’t always obvious. Bone contusions can mimic fractures in symptoms like swelling and pain but often require advanced diagnostic tools to confirm.
Stress fractures occur when a bone is repeatedly subjected to small amounts of force over time. Unlike fractures caused by a sudden impact, stress fractures develop gradually, often in active children participating in high-impact sports. These tiny cracks in the bone can be tricky to diagnose as they may not appear on a standard X-ray initially, requiring specialized imaging for clarity.
